Encompass Credit Union has joined with the Federal and State Governments in a campaign to fight back against scams. Scammers are using new and varied ways to steal money and identities, personal vigilance is the best protection.
We have a range of security measures in place to help protect our members from fraud, but at the end of the day, the best protection is only as good as the importance we each place on it.
The following five simple tips are a good start:
- Never hand over your PIN, password or personal banking details to anyone. Your Credit Union will never ask for your PIN or password in an email, in an on-line message or in an unsolicited phone call.
- Never send money to someone you don’t know personally, or know how to contact. Check names, addresses, phone numbers and referees of anyone before you even consider sending them money.
- Don’t just bin your old bills, records or receipts – destroy them so no-one can read them and steal your identity.
- Check your banking and credit card statements regularly to ensure that no-one is making unauthorised charges in your name.
- Be vigilant. If someone makes you an offer that sounds too good to be true. It probably is.
